Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that is formed by the nerves of L4, L5 and the first 3 sacral nerves.

Pain from this nerve is called Sciatica and it is defined as pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, which is caused by the compression of one of the above nerves.

This condition affects many people and having the right person examine you is important.

Causes of Sciatica include:

• Disc bulges
• Arthritis putting pressure on the nerves
• A lower back problem causing inflammation around the nerve
• Muscle spasm in the bottom muscles
• Spondylolisthesis – where one of the lower back bones slips forward

Sciatica is a common reason people come in to see us. Our examination will determine if we are likely the best people to help. If we are, we will recommend a treatment schedule. If not, we will refer you to the most appropriate person.
